Both fighters were representing San Jose as there hometowns, which coincidentally was where the match took place. Shamrock wanted to be known as the "King of San Jose", and to be crowned with the title, he had to beat Cung Le.
Though Cung Le came in as the challenger, he dominated the match and looked like the champ from the opening bell. Throughout the fight, Le threw kicks at Shamrock which proved to be the downfall of Shamrock who eventually could not go on.
The fight was in front of a packed house who wanted to watch there hometown fighters duke it out to see who would stand at the top of the city. During moments in the fight, you can hear chants of "Cung Le" in the background. His following in San Jose consists of many Vietnamese who have followed his career as one of the top fighters from there country.
