AZNRaps’ 2009 Movie Mayhem Tournament finally comes to an end. This tournament was a thrilling topical battle consisting of sixteen contestants all striving to display their talents by making a good audio track when given a random film. Although this year’s Movie Mayhem was only three rounds, it was packed with plenty of talented rappers who provided great material. In the end, only one participant reigned victorious and he goes by the name of Xin-Young.
Xin-Young’s first round was against SL and the movie they were given was Fighting. Both artists came with it but Xin-Young won flawlessly with all five judges vote. Round two, he was paired up against Dumpling and their film was Disney’s Mulan. This was another battle where the votes were unanimous in Xin-Young’s favor. The third and final round was a three way match where he went against Alkaline and Sean Beastly, another win for Xin-Young.
AZNRaps: How you doing Xin-Young! Congratulations on the win! Alright, let’s get this interview started. How did you come up with your rap alias? Give us a little background about yourself?
Xin-Young: Well, Xin-Young is my Chinese name, and I only go by that alias here amongst my fellow Asians lol. Locally, they know me as dat boy Chu or young Chu. My real name is Matthew Chu. I’m 22 years old, and I grew up in MiamiFlorida. 3-0-5 Stand up! Honestly, I hardly know any Asians (other than family), and given my area, it’s no wonder I developed a love for hip-hop and eventually picked up the mic.
AZNRaps: How long have you been rapping and how did you hear about AZNRaps.com?
Xin-Young: I’ve been doing this since the age of 13. So that’s like what, 9 years now? lol. I heard about AZNRaps.com from my older brother who also spits that fire. A lot of my collabs are actually with him. I don’t know how he heard about yall though.
AZNRaps: There was a lot of competition in this tournament. What were your thoughts on who you were up against?
Xin-Young: Yeah, a lot of the cats I had to face were emcees I respect. In fact, I thought a loss against SL in round 1 was very probable. The final match against Alkaline and Sean Beastly definitely had me worried. Those two know how to flow, and their sound quality rivals shit you hear on the radio. Each round I just came with it. Everything and I mean everything from flow, delivery, lyrics, and beat choice had to be relevant and applicable to the film. What can I say? I did the damn thing.
AZNRaps: Will you be participating in future tournaments?
Xin-Young: You can bet on it. I’m eager to hop on a traditional 1on1 audio battle tournament.
AZNRaps: What kind of rapper do you consider yourself as? Do you find yourself a stronger battle or topical one?
Xin-Young: I enjoy battling because it keeps my lyrical game on point. On the other hand, I love making real songs for mixtapes and kicks. I used to be an underground punchline rapper, but right now I’m all mainstream. I’m a versatile dude so I can’t be limited to one genre of hip hop. I’m all over the place. If it sounds good and sells, I’m with it.
AZNRaps: A lot of artists try their best to gain exposure anyway that they can. Since you won this tournament, what are your plans to show that you deserve this front page interview?
Xin-Young: I’ve been showing it. You gotta understand that I do this every day. This is my life. Whether it’s on AZNRaps.com or the cypher down the block, I’m out here putting my heart in every line I spit. If I don’t deserve the spotlight no one does.
